Manali
The other door into Spiti. Useful, loud, and the wrong place to meet the pass on the same afternoon you arrive.
Manali is the other way into Spiti, and it is a different kind of town from Shimla. It is lower, louder, and more used to people who have come to do something athletic. Old Manali, the mall, the taxi stand, the rows of shops selling the same jacket: you will see all of it if your tour starts here, and almost none of it is why we use the town. We use it because the road over the passes to the north is the short way into the valley when the season allows, and because some riders already know the place and want to begin where their bus stops.
The catch is the morning after. A start in Manali often means the big pass is not a story you work up to. It is the next day. Kunzum, or the road toward it, does not care that you slept in a town with cafes. The height comes quickly. This is why a Manali start is a choice we explain, not a default we hide. If you have never slept high, and the week is short, Shimla through Kinnaur is usually the kinder order. If you know the feeling and you want the pass while you are fresh, Manali is the correct door.
The town is also where a lot of bad advice is given for free. Someone in a cafe will tell you the road is shut, or open, or fine if you leave at four. Sometimes they are right. Often they left last week, or they heard it from someone who heard it. The desk checks the same road with people who are on it. When we say a Manali departure is going, it is because the pass and the beds on the far side are agreed, not because a blackboard outside a shop says the valley is open.
Practically, Manali can still fix a bike and sell you a layer. It cannot fix a plan that was wrong. If you arrive at noon and expect to ride to Kaza by dark, we will not agree, even if the sky is blue. The support car, the mechanic, and the night stop exist so that a problem at the top of the road is an inconvenience and not a night out. That only works if the day was drawn short enough to have an afternoon left.
We brief in the evening, the same way we do in Shimla. The map is the same valley. The difference is the order of the villages and the side from which the pass arrives. Riders who have done the Kinnaur road in a previous year sometimes ask for Manali because they want the other half. That is a good reason. Riders who choose it only because the bus ticket was cheaper should say so. We can still make it work, and we will say what the first day actually contains before you pay for the seat.
In the season when the pass is shut, Manali stops being a door and becomes a town beside a closed road. Winter tours do not pretend otherwise. We will not sell you a Manali start in a month when the only honest road is the Kinnaur one. If a form is delayed or a gate is down, you hear it before you are standing in a taxi queue with a bag and a booking that no longer matches the mountain.
Come the day before if you can. Eat simply. Do not treat the night as the holiday and the ride as the commute. Manali will still be here when you come down, if you come down this way. The valley is the part you came for, and it starts being itself only after the town is behind you.
