Tabo

A monastery older than most of the stories told about it, and a night that is quieter than Kaza.

Tabo is a village with a monastery that has been here, in one form or another, for about a thousand years. That sentence is doing a lot of work, and it is still the right one. The mud walls, the low halls, the paintings that have survived a climate which destroys almost everything else: this is not a viewpoint with a ticket window. It is a working religious place that also happens to be one of the reasons people ride across Kinnaur into Spiti at all.

We stop properly. A photograph from the road, taken without getting off, is a waste of the day you spent reaching it. The visit itself is quiet and should stay that way. Shoulders covered, shoes where you are asked to leave them, no drone, no commentary delivered at the volume of a city guide. If a monk is not interested in your questions, that is a complete answer. The paintings do not need you to understand every figure. They need you not to touch them.

Tabo

The village around the monastery is small, lower than Kaza, and often warmer in the evening by just enough to notice. For a group that has had a long day on the Kinnaur road, Tabo is a kinder night than pushing on for the sake of a schedule. The rooms are simple. The dinner is simple. The dark is very dark, and the sky, when it is clear, is the kind of sky people later describe badly because there are too many stars and not enough new adjectives. We do not plan a night walk. We also do not mind if you stand outside for ten minutes and then go to bed.

There is a practical note under the romance. The day into Tabo can include roadworks, a convoy, a stretch of river the engineers are still arguing with. Arrival times move. A tour that has promised you a guided lecture at five will be lying by Thursday. We promise the stop, the bed, and enough time to walk the complex without being hurried back onto the bike. If we are late, the visit gets the time, and the dinner gets later. That is the correct order.

Riders sometimes ask if they can stay an extra night. On a private plan, sometimes yes. On a fixed departure, the beds further up are already held, and an extra night here means a shorter night somewhere else. Say it when you enquire, not on the evening itself. The village is a good place to be bored in the best sense: a lane, a wall, a field, the river somewhere below, nothing that needs a ticket. People who cannot bear an empty afternoon are going to find Spiti long. Tabo is an early test of that, and a pleasant one.

In winter the same village is a different proposition. The light is short, the rooms matter more, and the road that was a delay in September can be a closed conversation in January. Winter expeditions still come this way, because the Kinnaur side is the side that stays possible, but the briefing is sterner and the day is shorter. Do not read a summer description and imagine January. The monastery will still be there. The afternoon may not.

Leave with less noise than you arrived with. That is the only souvenir that suits the place. The next villages are higher and starker. Tabo is the last one that still feels, a little, like a valley that grows things. Notice that before you go.
